: Le spectacle et ses spectateurs

A score is already a story.

Five sets, five moments of tension - someone collapses, returns, resists, then ultimately pulls back what seemed to be slipping away. The title of this exhibition exists before the images themselves. It only waits to be read.

Charles Serre had access to the central court.

He chose to turn to the stands.

In his work, the camera moves constantly - between Alcaraz and Sinner, and the tribunes, between the performative gesture and those observing it. Sixty thousand bodies suspended within the same instant. Following that collapse, return, resistance, and pullback. Involuntary portraits; and perhaps, for that very reason, among the most honest that exist.

"Le spectacle et ses Spectators" is a question posed at the porous boundary between these two — about what the act of looking transforms within the one who watches.

This exhibition highlights that same line of tension: the space where one comes both to be seen and to observe, where portraiture becomes a silent negotiation between what we believe we reveal and what light ultimately decides to retain.

In Serre's photographs, the faces in the stands did not know they were posing.

Perhaps that is precisely why they feel so true.
