For its 18th edition, Numéro art features Kenyan-born artist Michael Armitage on the cover to mark his exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice—undoubtedly one of the standout events of this Biennale year. Armitage presents paintings of rare intensity and extraordinary virtuosity that confront, without compromise, the violence of the contemporary world.
Our second cover spotlights Stanislava Kovalcikova, recipient of the 2026 Reiffers Initiatives Prize, which supports emerging artistic talent. On view at the Paris foundation, her paintings unfold as unstable spaces inhabited by personal mythologies, fragments of the present, and bodies held in tension—deeply unsettling and captivating.
Numéro art also revisits other major highlights and artists connected to the Venice Biennale, including Sammy Baloji, one of the leading figures of the contemporary art scene from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Through his work, Baloji continues to explore the layered histories of colonialism and modernity.
The magazine also traveled to the Amazon rainforest to meet artist Sara Flores, whose work is currently on view in the Peruvian Pavilion in Venice. A member of the Shipibo-Konibo people, Flores transforms the traditional kené motifs into a visual language that is at once spiritual and political.
This issue also celebrates an extraordinary dialogue between Jonathan Anderson’s first haute couture collection for Dior and the sculptures of Magdalene Odundo, a longtime friend of the designer. This exclusive series highlights their shared fascination with form as a deeply physical experience.
Also in this issue: Yu Nishimura, the rising star of the art market, opens the doors to his studio; Elizabeth Peyton in New York and Tracey Emin in London share new insights into their work; we explore major Paris exhibitions devoted to Henry Taylor, Jesse Darling, and Nan Goldin; and discover an original artistic creation.
