"Color or black and white?" In 1962, the young Joel Meyerowitz had no idea that this simple question from a film salesman would lead him into years of intense aesthetic reflection. Inspired by passionate discussions with fellow photographers Tony Ray-Jones and Garry Winogrand, Meyerowitz searched for his own visual language and began shooting with two cameras simultaneously—one loaded with black-and-white film, the other with color film. Drawing on the paired images produced by this unusual practice, Meyerowitz vividly recounts his formative years, tracing the development of one of the great pioneers of color photography.
